Lunch @ the Library
Tuesday, August 10 at Noon with Mary Ann Neely
Mary Ann Neeley, who has recently published The Works of Matthew Blue, Montgomery's First Historian. The 1878 City Directory of Montgomery, Alabama, included “A Brief History of Montgomery,” consisting of a “narrative” and a series of events arranged by the months. Compiled by Matthew Powers Blue, this was the earliest history of a place which already served as the center of Deep South cotton culture and as the first capital of the Confederacy. Contemporary historian Mary Ann Neeley has annotated Blue’s history to correct errors and clear up inconsistencies, and added other material on early churches, a genealogy of the colorful Blue family, and a Civil War diary by Blue’s sister, Ellen. The book also includes many 19th century photographs. Bring your own lunch. The Friends of the Library will provide the drinks and dessert!
Lunch @ the Library
Tuesday, September 14 at Noon with Clyde Bolton
Clyde Bolton, whose memoir Hadacol Days will soon be published. The title of Clyde Bolton’s warm memoir of the formative years of his youth is taken from a high school cheer: “Statham Wildcats on the Ball, They’ve Been Drinking Hadacol.” If you know what Hadacol is, Bolton cheerfully admits, that dates both you and him; if you don’t, ask your parents or grandparents. The Statham in the cheer refers to Statham High School, now as long gone as Hadacol, but equally effervescent in the author’s nostalgic but clearheaded look back at what life was like in small Southern towns of the 1940s and 1950s. Bring your own lunch. The Friends of the Library will provide the drinks and dessert!
Lunch @ the Library
Tuesday, September 28 at Noon with Jaye Murphy
Jaye will discuss her book Lord, My Lord. It is a wrenchingly honest collection of poems where I use my poetic style of story telling to vent the frustrations of my heart, to include struggles with self-identity, past pains, strongholds and my walk with Christ. Even if you are not a lover of poetry, but are a lover of inspirational and faith-filled stories, this book is for you. It is my belief and desire that within its contents, you will find relatable stories that will bless you, as it has blessed and healed me in many ways. Copies of the book Lord, My Lord will be available for $12.
